The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) became the first international cooperation organization in the country to join the Peru Carbon Footprint platform, which is promoted by the Ministry of the Environment (Minam).

In this regard, Maria del Carmen Sacasa, UNDP representative in Peru, highlighted Minam's initiative and urged other organizations and companies to join this call. "We join the effort promoted by Minam in reducing the carbon footprint, considering the impact it generates on the planet and on the lives of people, particularly those in vulnerable conditions," he said.

To date, there are 165 organizations that have signed up to the platform and 64 that have calculated their GHG emissions. The goal for 2021 is to reach the 100 organizations that have measured their carbon footprint, thus strengthening the country's climate action and showing that companies, in a context of COVID-19, are increasingly migrating towards a new coexistence that respects the environment.

UNDP has been promoting, alongside with the Minam, various projects to make climate action an opportunity for sustainable growth, such as the Project for the Implementation of the Climate Goals of Peru (NDC Support Program), which is part of Germany’s International Climate Initiative. Precisely, this project promotes the measurement of Peru’s Carbon Footprint as part of the climate commitment of public and private organizations.

Carbon Footprint Peru

Climate change represents a crucial issue for the future of Peru. In a context of economic reactivation and in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing the climate crisis also represents one of the priorities to ensure sustainable development and the well-being of the population, considering that climate change continues to be the greatest long-term challenge faced by humanity.

To confront this challenge, the Minam launches the Carbon Footprint Peru tool, available to all public and private organizations as a fundamental indicator to increase the efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability of organizations.

Likewise, in order to encourage more organizations to join the Peru Carbon Footprint initiative, a symbolic character has been created. This is Nono, a curious and observant Peruvian spectacled bear who looks for and watches the carbon footprints left by companies with the help of his large glasses.
